- The Mini Hound Tutorial
- -----------------------
-
- This file gives the user a guided tour of how to use Mini Hound for several
- different purposes.
-
- To start run Mini Hound in the normal way and it will install itself on the
- iconbar. Next move the mouse pointer over the iconbar icon and press the
- SELECT (left) mouse button. This make a window pop up in the bottom left
- corner of the screen, just above the iconbar.
-
- Suppose we want to find an alternative word for 'alternative'.
-
- In the writable icon in that window type the word 'alternative' and then
- press SELECT over the icon marked 'Search'. Mini Hound will then perform a
- search, which should take a few seconds if you are running it from a floppy
- disc, or less than a second from hard disc.
-
- Next another window will pop up containing the following :
-
- --------------------------------------------------
- | |
- | alternate : Variation |
- | alternate : Irresolution |
- | alternate : Correlation |
- | alternate : Sequence |
- | alternate : anacoluthon |
- | alternate : Oscillation |
- | alternate : Periodicity |
- | alternating : Changeableness |
- | alternative : Substitution |
- | alternative : Choice |
- | |
- | Press SELECT over an entry in the |
- | above list to view it in full. |
- | |
- --------------------------------------------------
-
- The left hand column of the list contains the exact word found in the
- search, the right hand column shows the first word contained in the section
- of the thesaurus which contains that word.
-
- So in our case the search has produced two matches for 'alternative' plus
- some extra matches for words which are for 'alternate' and 'alternating'.
- These extra matches are just Mini Hound trying to be helpful.
-
- Now the most likely alternative word is going to by under 'Substitution'.
- Move the mouse pointer so that it is over the word 'Substitution' in the
- list and press the SELECT mouse button.
-
- After a short pause another window appears which contains the full thesaurus
- entry :
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
- | Rogette |
- | |
- | Substitution, commutation, supplanting, metaphor, metonymy. |
- | substitute, ersatz, makeshift, replacement, succedaneum, shift, |
- | stopgap, dummy, scapegoat, double, alternative. |
- | representative, deputy, palimpsest. |
- | price, consideration, equivalent. |
- | substitute, supplant, supersede, cannibalize, commute. |
- | substituted, ersatz, phony, vicarious, subdititious. |
- | instead. |
- | |
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- As you can see, a fair few to choose from. Moving the mouse pointer over any
- of the words in this window and pressing SELECT will pass that word to the
- caret, pressing ADJUST will perform a search on that word. Pressin MENU
- anywhere over the window brings up a save window allowing you to save the
- full entry as a text file.
-
-
- As another example, suppose a word is on the tip of your tongue the 'Wild
- Card' and 'Sounds Like' searches are very useful. For example if you know
- your word starts with 'pref' but cant remember much else, entering 'pref*'
- into the writable icon and selecting the 'Wild Card' icon produces the
- following list of words :
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
- | Rogette |
- | |
- | preface prefatory prefect prefecture prefer preference preferential |
- | preferment prefiguration prefigure prefigurement prefix |
- | |
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Again pressing SELECT over any of these words passes it to the caret, ADJUST
- performs a search on that word, and MENU allows you to save the list.
-
- As aonther exapmle, type 'aperition' into the writable icon and SELECT the
- 'Sounds Like' icon. A list is the produced containing 'apparition',
- 'epuration' and 'operation'.
